bowhuntingThe changes in design of the bow and arrow has occurred over thousands of years, but it has only been in the last few decades that major modern technological advances have been made in the bows used for bowhunting deer.

In the past, longbows and recurve bows were the bows of choice for for whitetail deer hunters. Today the current sport of bowhunting has changed completely due to the overwhelming use of the compound bow as most hunters choice for their bow hunting equipment.

Through the use of cables and pulleys, the design of the bow is such that the hunter can pull back the bow through its draw weight and then the action of the pulleys allows the pull needed to hold back before the shot to be highly reduced. This effect is commonly called 'let off' and allows the bow to be held at full draw with considerably less effort than standard bows.

the compound bow allows a much higher level of accuracy that previous bow designs. The amount of reduction in the amount of force needed to hold the bow at full draw is typically 50% to 65% of the bows designed draw weight. Some extreme bows claim let off in the 90% range.

These changes in bow design have made the compound bow an extremely accurate tool when bow hunting deer. Combined with modern technology in material design both for the bow and arrows, accuracy and ease of use has increased orders of magnitude over previous bow types. A compound bow has many advantages. It is lighter in weight, shorter and easier to carry and maneuver, and made of materials that require less care and worry about being damaged by the elements.

Accessories for the compound bow include trigger releases, different types of sights including cross hair and pin sights, stabilizers or v-bars which help to stabilize the bow before the shot, and various specialized arrow rests that help ensure accuracy.

There are many different variations of styles, sizes, draw weights, pulley configurations and types of compound bows available today. Bows are designed with the end use in mind as well as the size and physique of the hunter. Bows for hunting whitetail deer do not need to have the power of those that a hunter might use for bear or other big game animals.

The experience and guidance of other accomplished bow hunters is of major help if you are first looking to get a bow. Do your research before you make a decision. While low price is always attractive, try to acquire the highest quality bow that fits in your budget.

The sport of bowhunting deer is one of the most enjoyable outdoor hunting sports. The season is long, much longer than for gun hunting, and the quiet times in the woods when you are on a hunt can be an extremely agreeable and gratifying experience.

Alright guys, here is the situation. On the property that I hunt, there are a few different locations in which would normally be very good for deer hunting. However, I am after one deer in particular. He is a wiley one. I see him all year except for during hunting season. There are an abundance of trails that the deer walk, and I can take several of them, but this guy is 6 years old now. I have been watching him since he was a fawn. He has a white spot on his left shoulder so I know it is the same deer. He was a twin, but somehow the other one just disappeared about 3 years ago maybe someone else got that one. He has a very nice rack, and is fully mature. I saw him not too long ago, and is a very impressive 10 or 12 point. I saw clearly 5 points standing on each antler, but it was a quick view, so he might have more. He lives on my and a neighbors property, which I have permission to hunt. I have a funnel to a food plot, but when deer season opens he just isn't there. There is another funnel that is used quiet often too, and I seen several deer during past hunting seasons on this trail. The problem with the two funnels is this, for some reason the wind changes radically, and the one deer I want keeps eluding me during season.

Last year, I hunted for him all season, and the very next day after hunting season closed, he walked to about 20 feet from me! Talk about frustration!

I have tried setting up near water where I have seen him drinking, and I have set up less than 50 yards from where I have seen him bed. I have set up on the funnels, and I set up at the wood lines where he eats the rest of the year on acorns. I'm out of ideas now as to where to set up to get this majestic animal. I am very successful with getting other deer, but how can I get this one to come near me? I normally hunt with a bow because I have a lot longer season bowhunting, but even with a rifle, he just isn't there for me to put the crosshairs on. Where does he go? I can understand the patterns change during the rut, and that he goes nocturnal after pressure is on, but on opening week of bow season? There are only 3 hunters that are on the property, and we stay well away from one another, but even the other guys don't see him either. Do you have any ideas? It is illegal to bait in Alabama, so that is not an option, but I doubt it would help with this guy anyways. Any tips would be appreciated. Bow season starts Oct 15, and the rut here is in Jan.

The game commission brought coyotes into my home state (Pennsylvania) and now that the coyotes are over populating, they "introduced" 2 mountain lions to the ravine thats on my property..

Now, the true question is, can I kill either of these mountain lions in a non self defense situation? And can I apply to carry a weapon of defense while bowhunting?

Please only answer if you know what your talking about, and please no stupid answers.. the last thing I want is to have to shoot the leapords that are hunting the mountain lions that are hunting the coyotes that hunt the deer....

Hi, I'm 18, and I have been a bow hunter for 5 years now. I have always used a compound longbow, and was never a fan of a crossbow. I think that a crossbow is more of a rifle than a bow (of course it shoots and arrow and does not use a bullet) but I can't stand the thought of someone sitting aiming a mounted arrow and calling that 'bowhunting'. Bowhunting is about having enough skill to blend with the enviornment but still draw back a bow and have enough talent to aim correctly. I don't think crossbows should be allowed to people unless they are under the age of 15 or unless the person using it is incapable of using a compound bow. I'm justin wondering... does anyone else feel the same way I do about crossbows and bowhunting, or am I just being stubborn? Thanks... all comments are welcome.
No, my bow is a Mathews Drenalin LD, and I use Rage 2 blade expandable broadheads. lol
