Hunting Arrows

There are two things to consider when choosing the right arrows for bowhunting - what arrow weight you want to shoot, and how stiff the shaft needs to be to complement your draw weight and arrow length. Not every bowhunter wants the lightest and fastest arrows - shooting feather-weights can actually damage your bow. Light arrows absorb as much of the bow's energy as heavier arrows do, so if your arrows are consistently too light, the vibrations can damage your bow.
According to The Archery Manufacturer's Organization (AMO), the standard minimum arrow weight should be roughly six grains for lighteach pound of your bow's maximum draw weight (in other words, a 60-pound bow should take a 360-grain arrow). A heavy modern hunting arrow weight about 8 to 10 grains per pound - if you're interested in speed, you can go as light a 5 grains per pound, but that should be as light as you go.
Shaft stiffness is important because of the pull-and-release manner in which arrows leave the bow. With a finger-released arrow, it has to go through a series of oscillations called "paradox" that begins when the string leaves your fingers - bending of the arrow's shaft has to be timed perfectly so it passes around the bow without hitting the riser. So, to achieve good flight, your arrow shafts have to be an exact match for your bow and your release style. It's different for mechanical-release bows - there's less flex, and it's almost all confined to an up-and-down movement, so you you can get away with a wider range of shaft stiffness and still get good arrow flight.
Point weight is also an important element of choosing the correct arrow stiffness, especially if you release with fingers. Determine what broadhead weight you'll be using to hunt with before buying your arrows, and then get some off-season practice with field points of the same weight. If you'll be hunting whitetail deer, you'll be shooting from an average 20 yards, a distance that a mid-weight arrow can handle easily. A heavier arrow will require more accuracy on your part as it's slower, but you'll have a quieter shoot with maximum penetration. Lightweight arrows are great for target practice, but unless you have keen eyesight and regularly shoot at 25 yards or more, they're best left alone. Choosing the right arrows for bowhunting is a matter of style, what kind of bow you have, and simple trial-and-error.

Legal to hunt deer with an AK-47 assault rifle?
March 30, 2010 by Bowhunter
I KNOW it's not legal in Louisiana. Checked with the local game warden here. There is a 10,000 dollar fine. But I'm wondering about other parts of the country. It would be my choice of weapons to use, because of it's extreme reliability; you can drop it in the mud, in the water, etc. and it will never misfire, and never jam.
They say it pulverizes the deer - but if the object is to kill them ANYWAY - I don't see the problem. Bows and arrows would be more cruel than an AK-47. Or shooting them with a small caliber, so they can run miles through the woods before they die.
For those who don't think I know anything about weapons, the Kalishnikov AK-47 fires a 7.62 mm bullet - the same diameter as an M-60 machine gun.
Don't know - don't care what the muzzle velocity is.
Served 7 years, 3 months, 21 days as a paratrooper in the army - and about 13 or 14 years altogether - if you count inactive and reserve.
I'm also a combat veteran.
ALSO? I have no illusions or delusions about "spraying" anything with automatic weapons fire.
The person who wrote that is just ignorant.
*******************************************************
Final detail: Semi-automatic is fine with me.
I haven't done that much hunting, but want to get into it. I wouldn't mind having an AK-47 anyway. And if I can use it for hunting? That would justify the cost for me. I'm looking at a thousand dollars on down. At least that's what the local pawn shops and gun dealers are charging.
Thank you for a good answer.
I'm giving you the maximum points.

im lakota native american does anyone agree that the native american were better people than white man? after all how would you fell if someone invaded your shores and slautered your familly, burned your homes, and you couldent do anything about it? in my opinon the contriey was better off when the red skins ruled. actually they didnt even think they ruled they thought they were just looking after the land for the great spirit (god). the native americans werent the savages. they even apolagised to the animals they hunted and killed. they took only what the land could restore. they used evry little bit of the anamal they killed. the rare battles they fought with each other was not for land or riches, but for suplies for the winter. they had a choise of sitting there and waching the white man distroy there land and way of life of fight back with bow and arrows againsed guns and canons! im lakota native american and im proud to be who i am, whether poor or rich it makes me im proud!

I'm new to bow hunting and I purchased a Wilson Bow last night at dick's sporting goods. When I took one shot out of it, the part that holds the arrow straight just fell out. the next day, I realized that the string is now off the wheel! Do the people at dick's know what there doing? How much is it going to cost to get all this fixed?
Sorry Its a Martin.
No I did not dry-fire the bow.

...to build homes out of animal hides/wood/stone, hunt with throwing/piercing spears or bows and arrows, build fires, bury their dead, and all the stuff that we humans learned to do in the Stone Age, then let them advance on their own from there? I think that would be amazing if we weren't the only civilized species on the planet. And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do some kind of Planet of the Apes-type rebellion. Also, we could teach them not to make the same mistakes we humans have made and are still making.

This is a little bit from my novel about werewolves. Well, sort of. These werewolves are born as wolves, but can transform into humans at will. They are called Keepers because their entire destiny in life is to protect a single human that they are tied to from evil forces. They must protect them to the death. Literally. If they fail to protect their human, and their human dies, the Keeper wil die as well. They supposedly went extinct in Medeivel times when a Keeper named Bhaskar turned evil and began to form an army of Keepers. His policy was either join... or die. Many, many Keepers and humans alike were killed, and some went into hiding. He also felt that he could triple the power of his army by joining forces with his human, a very powerful wizard named Bram. Bram refused and a huge battle was held, killing the remaining Keepers in Bhaskar's army and Bram freezing Bhaskar for all enternity. Before Bram died however, he left a prophecy with his grandson that "The Dark One would rise again and be defeated by one of power in his blood". Then moving to present day, 17 year-old Keeper Arrow and his younger 15 year-old sister Peyton are the only two Keepers left. They were raised by adoptive human parents, and are now living in the wild. Little did they know that their fates were tied to two strange human teenagers as a threat from eons ago becomes unfrozen...
From "The Keepers" Chapter 1:
Arrow had seen the prey, and it was his. He stalked closer and closer to it until it was almost in pouncing range. Arrow’s sensitive nose filled with it’s musky scent. He could practically smell it’s fear as the animal knew something was watching it. He took one step closer as his muscles tensed and bunched, waiting for the adrenaline rush that would send him flying through the air at the deer. A twig cracked underneath his foot. The grazing deer looked up, and thundered away. Arrow had already leapt forward however, and ended up alone in the field, his only sighted prey in weeks gone. Damn, he thought angrily. I almost had that one too. He growled quietly at his disappeared prey, and walked back up the rocky hill he had come from. He could not stay in one area long after hunting (or almost hunting). If he did, the Howlers would find him. Not only that, but his younger sister Peyton was waiting for him. He carefully stepped onto a boulder in front of him. Any wrong move on this cliff could cause a rockslide, and then he would defiantly be in trouble. Suddenly he heard what sounded like the shifting of a rock behind him. He was being followed. Arrow whipped his head around as a snarl ripped through his teeth and the ferocity of a predator burned in his eyes. A small grey wolf stepped out of the shadows. “Calm down Arrow,” she growled fiercely. “You’ll attract Howlers with your noise.” “Peyton, I told you to stay at the cave!” Arrow snarled, relieved but as angry as ever with his sister. She was only fifteen, but had the avid skills of a hunter and fighter. “You’re getting off topic,” Peyton said, rolling her eyes. She was extremely annoyed with her brother for treating her like a child. “Did you catch any food or not?”
Thanks!
Also, I've never read Twilight, and I haven't seen more than one or two books out about werewolves... ever.
I'm sorry if I wasn't making my plot clear enough! I was running out of space!
Their human parents found them in the woods alone. They had heard legends of the Keepers, but had never beleived them to be true until now. They raised them for several years, but then the Howlers tracked them down and killed them. Now Arrow and Peyton are on the run.
Sorry for adding so many details, but the prophecy is necessary. I didn't want to put it in at first for that very reason, but it was an easy way to link the first novel with the sequel.
Yes, I am planning on publishing it. ![]()
Gr! More details! XD
I probably should have included the prolouge instead of the first chapter, because every question you asked is explained in it. XD That's why I'm not really surprised that you think it has premise problems, but really it is ALL explained in the prolouge.
Also, some major points in the book are to be able to piece legends of the Keepers together yourselves. Like it is not supposed to be entirely clear of who the Howlers are until later.

I bow hunt bears and they are convinced I will get eaten someday. Any way I would like to know what the best ammo to feed this thing. It came with a couple boxes of wolf fmjs. They cycle fine and the gun has never jamed even after lots of quad dust. The point is I know way more about arrows than 45 acp. I want a round that cycles good shoots accuratly and has more knock down power. I know from my limited rifle expierence that hollow points have alot more umpth! I hound hunt coons and bobcat and use a cci 22 hollow piont. Nothing else works.
I have killed many bears without incident. Also Oregon does allow me to carry a handgun while hunting. Bear in particular I can use a rifle or bow or handgun.
