There are two things to consider when choosing the right arrows for bowhunting - what arrow weight you want to shoot, and how stiff the shaft needs to be to complement your draw weight and arrow length. Not every bowhunter wants the lightest and fastest arrows - shooting feather-weights can actually damage your bow. Light arrows absorb as much of the bow's energy as heavier arrows do, so if your arrows are consistently too light, the vibrations can damage your bow.
According to The Archery Manufacturer's Organization (AMO), the standard minimum arrow weight should be roughly six grains for lighteach pound of your bow's maximum draw weight (in other words, a 60-pound bow should take a 360-grain arrow). A heavy modern hunting arrow weight about 8 to 10 grains per pound - if you're interested in speed, you can go as light a 5 grains per pound, but that should be as light as you go.
Shaft stiffness is important because of the pull-and-release manner in which arrows leave the bow. With a finger-released arrow, it has to go through a series of oscillations called "paradox" that begins when the string leaves your fingers - bending of the arrow's shaft has to be timed perfectly so it passes around the bow without hitting the riser. So, to achieve good flight, your arrow shafts have to be an exact match for your bow and your release style. It's different for mechanical-release bows - there's less flex, and it's almost all confined to an up-and-down movement, so you you can get away with a wider range of shaft stiffness and still get good arrow flight.
Point weight is also an important element of choosing the correct arrow stiffness, especially if you release with fingers. Determine what broadhead weight you'll be using to hunt with before buying your arrows, and then get some off-season practice with field points of the same weight. If you'll be hunting whitetail deer, you'll be shooting from an average 20 yards, a distance that a mid-weight arrow can handle easily. A heavier arrow will require more accuracy on your part as it's slower, but you'll have a quieter shoot with maximum penetration. Lightweight arrows are great for target practice, but unless you have keen eyesight and regularly shoot at 25 yards or more, they're best left alone. Choosing the right arrows for bowhunting is a matter of style, what kind of bow you have, and simple trial-and-error.

So, you have decided to take up the sport of archery. After choosing your bow, whether it be a modern (compound) or a traditional (recurve or longbow), you may be asking yourself what kind of arrow should I use? The type of arrow to use is mostly just personal choice. Yet, there are a few factors that should be considered when choosing your shooting arrow. These include the type of bow you are using, modern or traditional, and whether you use your bow for hunting or target shooting. There are four types of arrows that archery participants can choose from, these are:
Cedar or other wood - Aluminum - Carbon Arrows - or Carbon/Aluminum hybrids
A cedar, or wood, arrow is usually chosen for its look and for nostalgia. Wood shafted arrows are reasonably durable, heavy, quiet - both when shot and when carried in a quiver, and are reasonably affordable. These types of arrows are fine to be used in a traditional bow, but compound bows really should not use a wood shafted arrow. The main disadvantages to this type of arrow is it is not as durable or straight as others, and that it can have a tendency to warp because of the outdoor elements.
The aluminum shafted arrow has been around since the 1970's. This type of arrow is extremely straight, durable, lightweight, generally cost effective, and are unaffected by the weather. They have high speed and flatter trajectories than the wood shafted arrow. However, aluminum shafted arrows can be noisy when carried around, and have a tendency to break and bend.
Carbon arrows are more recent to the archery market, only having been around since the early 1990's. These arrows are strong and lightweight, as well as quiet and durable. They can be broken with enough force, but bending in this type of arrow is almost non-existent. Carbon arrows are on the more expensive side, but as more archers use them the cost is beginning to drop.
Carbon/aluminum hybrid arrows are simply an aluminum core with a carbon wrapping. They combine each of the advantages and disadvantages of both the carbon arrow and the aluminum arrow. These hybrid arrows are reasonably durable, lightweight, and extremely straight. However, due to their aluminum core, bending and breaking is still common. They are also the most expensive commonly used arrows, but are the fastest, and have the flattest trajectories, of all the options.
Now, choosing an archery arrow is always your personal choice; but spending some time comparing prices and durability will always benefit you in the long run. And remember if you are shooting with a traditional bow, you may use any arrow; but with modern bows it is best to stick with aluminum, carbon, or hybrid arrows.
If you plan to learn archery, then it is useful to understand that it is the archery arrows that are the most important piece of equipment, even more than the bow that you use. If you do not have any first class quality arrows your accuracy will not be up to scratch and your performance will suffer. This means it is essential to learn what makes a professional archery arrow. There are many factors that need considering.
The stiffness of the arrow shaft needs to be studied, as this will affect to what degree the arrow wobbles as it is flying in the air. It is better to purchase arrows that do not bend and flex so much.
Modern arrows can be manufactured from various materials; these will alter its inherent performance capabilities. Usually arrows will be made from wood, carbon, or aluminum. If you are a novice to archery then you should seek expert advice as to which composition best suits your requirements. The weight of the arrow will also have a bearing on its performance. The heavier it is the more force with which it will strike, but it will fly with less speed than a lighter variety. This needs consideration when choosing which are right for you.
Another important aspect when purchasing archery arrows is the tip or point. This will vary depending upon the type of archery you will be doing. If you plan to hunt animals with your bow then the point should have been specially designed for this purpose.
If you have ever seen archery taking place then you will know that all arrows have feathers on them, these are actually called 'fletching'. Today only some arrows use real feathers, many will have plastic or synthetic versions. To decide which you prefer you can try out all the versions to see which is best for your requirements.
A final consideration is the arrow's nock. A nock is the slit at the end of the shaft that sits on the bow string. It helps to keep the arrow in position before it is released. It should neither be too tight or too slack, somewhere in the middle is perfect.
The fun you can have with archery is heavily dependent on choosing quality arrows. You can also become a better archer by doing so. It is best to try out a few options and take advice of experts as much as you can. Also bear in mind that cheap arrows are often not worth the money.
I KNOW it's not legal in Louisiana. Checked with the local game warden here. There is a 10,000 dollar fine. But I'm wondering about other parts of the country. It would be my choice of weapons to use, because of it's extreme reliability; you can drop it in the mud, in the water, etc. and it will never misfire, and never jam.
They say it pulverizes the deer - but if the object is to kill them ANYWAY - I don't see the problem. Bows and arrows would be more cruel than an AK-47. Or shooting them with a small caliber, so they can run miles through the woods before they die.
For those who don't think I know anything about weapons, the Kalishnikov AK-47 fires a 7.62 mm bullet - the same diameter as an M-60 machine gun.
Don't know - don't care what the muzzle velocity is.
Served 7 years, 3 months, 21 days as a paratrooper in the army - and about 13 or 14 years altogether - if you count inactive and reserve.
I'm also a combat veteran.
ALSO? I have no illusions or delusions about "spraying" anything with automatic weapons fire.
The person who wrote that is just ignorant.

Final detail: Semi-automatic is fine with me.
I haven't done that much hunting, but want to get into it. I wouldn't mind having an AK-47 anyway. And if I can use it for hunting? That would justify the cost for me. I'm looking at a thousand dollars on down. At least that's what the local pawn shops and gun dealers are charging.
im lakota native american does anyone agree that the native american were better people than white man? after all how would you fell if someone invaded your shores and slautered your familly, burned your homes, and you couldent do anything about it? in my opinon the contriey was better off when the red skins ruled. actually they didnt even think they ruled they thought they were just looking after the land for the great spirit (god). the native americans werent the savages. they even apolagised to the animals they hunted and killed. they took only what the land could restore. they used evry little bit of the anamal they killed. the rare battles they fought with each other was not for land or riches, but for suplies for the winter. they had a choise of sitting there and waching the white man distroy there land and way of life of fight back with bow and arrows againsed guns and canons! im lakota native american and im proud to be who i am, whether poor or rich it makes me im proud!
I'm new to bow hunting and I purchased a Wilson Bow last night at dick's sporting goods. When I took one shot out of it, the part that holds the arrow straight just fell out. the next day, I realized that the string is now off the wheel! Do the people at dick's know what there doing? How much is it going to cost to get all this fixed?
Sorry Its a Martin.
No I did not dry-fire the bow.
...to build homes out of animal hides/wood/stone, hunt with throwing/piercing spears or bows and arrows, build fires, bury their dead, and all the stuff that we humans learned to do in the Stone Age, then let them advance on their own from there? I think that would be amazing if we weren't the only civilized species on the planet. And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do some kind of Planet of the Apes-type rebellion. Also, we could teach them not to make the same mistakes we humans have made and are still making.
