Hey guys,
I'm really interested in taking up archery as a hobby, and I have no clue where to start. I only want to shoot targets, but I've never shot anything in my life... I don't even know if we have a local hunting store... so what should I do to get started?

you need to find a bow you are comfortable with if they will not let you shoot it at the store go some where else

The best way to get started is to find a range. Some ranges offer instruction and equipment. Don’t just go out and buy a bow, not just yet, find the range, take an intro class. If you’re in the US, go to google and type in your state and the words “achery association”. Your local archery association should be able to point you to the nearest range.

Many things about archery is not intuitive, without a second pair of eyes watching you, you can happily learn all the wrong things.

Now, if you’re in the middle of nowhere, then you have no choice. Get the book by Ruth Rowe, she wrote a very good book for beginners. Get yourself a very light bow, something about 20 lbs or less if you like recurves, for compounds you can push it up a bit more and get a 35-40lbs bow.

first place to start would be to find a local range that offers lessons etc
you can find a local club or range at
look under the JOAD tab (Junior Olympic Archery Development). This will give a listing of clubs and ranges in your state that offer classes.
For the classes most clubs/ranges have equiptment for you to start out with and will also provide basic coaching for a beginner.

Hope this helps if you have any further questions feel free to contact me direct.
